Sara Werec was eleven when her big brother Ralph shipped out to a war 130 light years away. She promised herself she would follow him, become a Reasoner, and pilot a Strain right alongside him. Five years later she is tops at the Grapera academy. Then the raid hits. Sara climbs into her machine to fight back, and the enemy pilot takes her apart in seconds. He stops. He looks at her. It is Ralph. He puts a hole in her, wrecks her mimic, kills everyone else on the base, and vanishes with a sleeping girl from a capsule. Just like that, her brother is a traitor and she is alive for reasons she cannot explain. She goes back under a new name, flying again, hunting the one person she trusted. Why did Ralph leave her breathing, and what is he really after?
