A supernova tore through the sky once, and Earth lost almost everyone. That was 189 years ago. Now the survivors' grandchildren have built giant stations called Foundations all over the solar system, watching the stars for the next disaster. Shima Katase passes her entrance exams, says goodbye to Earth, and heads for the Stellvia. Her mother never wanted her to go. Shima has one dream: to see the galaxy with her own eyes, and maybe help keep Earth from burning again. What she gets is flight training, a head full of doubts, and classmates who are better than her at everything. She crashes, she fumes, she makes friends and enemies faster than she can keep track. Then comes word of the Great Mission, the plan to shield Earth from the second wave, and suddenly the tests are not just tests anymore. Can a girl who can barely hold her own in a practice flight really stand between humanity and the sky falling a second time?
