Saki

Slice of Life2009GonzoRating 7,513+HD

Saki Miyanaga can't stand mahjong. Every relative she has plays at a national level, and in her house losing is simply not allowed, so she taught herself a trick: she plays every hand to land exactly at zero points. No win, no loss, just invisibility. Then Kyoutarou Suga needs a fourth player and drags her into the school club room anyway. Three quiet rounds, three perfect zeros. Anyone else would have missed it. Hisa Takei, the club president, does not. She watches Saki's tiles and sees something nobody was supposed to see, then pushes her to actually play, and the result humiliates Nodoka Haramura, the reigning middle school champion, who has to sit there and lose to a girl who claims she hates the game. That is how the friendship starts. Badly. Saki sticks around, the two of them patch things up, and slowly she stops flinching every time someone shuffles the tiles. Now the club has one target: nationals. But if she opens up and plays for real, how long before the family that never tolerates a loss comes looking for her?
