Second year of high school, and Chihaya still has one thing on her mind: karuta. She wants the national team title at Omi Jingu, and she wants to be Queen, the strongest female player in Japan. There is just one problem. The club needs five new members or it falls apart. Five. And to most students, a card game where you slap poems before your opponent does sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry. Then something shifts. Arata, the boy who first taught her karuta back when they were kids, starts playing again. The prodigy who walked away from the game is picking up the cards once more, and that changes the air around everything. So now Chihaya has to scrape together a team from almost nothing, whip them into shape, and survive the brutal qualifiers, all while the friend she never forgot is quietly finding his way back. Can she really drag a handful of beginners all the way to the top, or is the Queen title just a dream she keeps chasing?
