Chihaya spent her childhood trailing after her sister, a girl groomed for magazine covers, convinced that was the only dream worth having. Then a transfer student named Arata showed up, quiet and easy to pick on, and when she stepped in to stop the bullying, he repaid her by teaching her a card game played on tatami mats. Poetry, speed, reflexes. She was hooked before she understood what had happened to her. Then everything scattered. Arata moved away. Taichi drifted into his own cold, careful life. Chihaya stayed behind with a skill nobody around her cared about and no one left to play against. So she did the loud thing: she started a karuta club at her high school from nothing, dragging Taichi back into the game and recruiting whoever was willing to sit down and learn. The goal is the national championship at Omi Shrine. Standing in her way are players who have trained since they could walk, and one title she cannot stop thinking about, the Queen of Karuta. Can a girl who never had a talent of her own take that crown from the ones who were born for it?
