Ruuko Kominato is quiet, a little awkward, an eighth grader who mostly keeps to herself. Then her brother hands her a box of WIXOSS cards, the game every girl at school is obsessed with, and inside her very first pack something moves. A girl's voice comes out of the LRIG card. Not a recording, not a gimmick. A real girl, with her own name and her own wants, and only Ruuko can hear her. That is how Ruuko learns she is a Selector, one of a handful of players who can step into a parallel space nobody else can see and fight card battles there. Win the whole thing and you become the Dreaming Girl, and your deepest wish comes true. Lose three times and your life falls apart. Three losses. That is all it takes. So now she sits across from other girls who smile at her in the hall and then try to crush her in the dark, and her friends are caught in the same trap, and none of them can simply walk away. Tama chatters, eager and strange, and Ruuko starts to wonder what Tama actually wants. What happens when the wish you have been chasing turns out to belong to someone else?
