Ren Amamiya steps in when a man pins a woman against a wall, and for that he gets a year of probation and a one way ticket to Tokyo. The woman never testifies. The man has friends in high places. So Ren ends up in a cramped attic above a cafe run by a cranky old acquaintance of his parents, starting over at Shujin Academy with everyone already whispering about his record. Then his phone grows an app he never installed. One wrong tap and the school hallways are gone, replaced by a twisted version of the city where people's hidden selves walk around in the open. Something wakes up inside Ren there, and it isn't gentle. Together with Ryuji, a loudmouth classmate who stumbled into the same mess, and a few other students carrying their own grudges, he starts dragging corrupt adults into their own heads, forcing them to confess. The Phantom Thieves get famous fast, and fame cuts both ways. Right when the whole city is talking about them, Ren is in handcuffs, sitting in an interrogation room. A prosecutor named Sae Niijima walks in and wants the whole story. So what exactly does she do with it?
