Requiem from the Darkness

Kyougoku Natsuhiko: Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari · 京極夏彦　巷説百物語
HorrorMysterySupernatural2003TMS EntertainmentRating 7,117+HD

Momosuke Yamaoka used to write riddles for kids. Now he trudges through the mountains of Edo-period Japan, hunting down a hundred ghost stories to drag his failing career back from the dead. A wrong turn sends him straight into a murder: a monk named Mataichi and his two companions, caught mid-kill. The monk had warned him to go back. He doesn't. That refusal hooks him to a strange outfit that calls itself the Ongyo. They hunt legends, sure, but their real work is punishment. The guilty pay with their lives, and each case pulls Momosuke deeper into things no ordinary man should see. He keeps telling himself he is only collecting material. Then why does he keep showing up where they are? The bodies pile up, his principles fray, and the line between human and monster gets harder to find. When a man has already watched this much, does walking away even stay possible?
