Shu is just a regular kid. He practices kendo, he has a crush, he loses a match and climbs a smokestack to sulk while the sun goes down. Up there he finds a quiet girl with blue hair and a pendant. She barely answers him. Then the air splits open and machines come for her, and Shu, too stubborn to run, grabs on and gets dragged along with her. The place he lands in is all sand and heat and soldiers. No water anywhere, except the kind Lala-Ru can pull out of thin air with that pendant. When the pendant goes missing, everyone decides Shu took it, and the army has ways of asking. Kids here carry guns. Kids here get worked until they drop. Shu keeps getting beaten, keeps getting hungry, keeps saying he will save her anyway, and somewhere in the middle of all that he meets people he never chose and now cannot leave behind. A man named Hamdo runs this world with a smile that does not reach his eyes, and he wants what Lala-Ru carries. Shu wants to get her out and keep his friends alive, and those two things keep pulling in opposite directions. How much of himself is he willing to spend to save the people he loves?
