Somewhere out past the dead cities, an old story refuses to die: when the world finally gives out, a door to paradise opens. Only wolves can find it. Problem is, everyone figured wolves were gone two hundred years ago. They are not. They walk around on two legs, wearing human faces, and nobody notices. A wounded white wolf called Kiba follows a scent into Freeze City, a broke little town run by a man named Orkham who does not care who he crushes. The smell is a lunar flower, and it is supposed to be the key to the door. Kiba is not alone. Tsume, Hige, and Toboe caught the same scent and came for the same reason. What they walk into instead is Quent Yaiden, an ex-sheriff who hunts wolves for sport, and his dog Blue. Meanwhile a sleeping girl named Cheza, the Flower Maiden, sits in a lab where Sheer Degre is studying her. Wolf blood wakes her. The wolves break in to reach her. Lord Darcia the Third takes her first, and here is the part nobody saw coming: his people are the ones who made her. So now four wolves are chasing a girl across a wasteland toward a place that might not exist, with a hunter on their trail and a nobleman who already knows more about paradise than they do. If the door only opens for wolves, what happens when the man holding the key is not one?
