Japan, 1955. The war is over, the country is broke, and hungry kids are getting rounded up by the truckload. Mario Minakami lands at Shounan Special Reform School with five other boys, all of them facing serious charges, all of them shoved into the same cramped cell. Waiting there is Rokurouta Sakuragi, an older inmate who used to box. He doesn't preach. He just starts teaching them how to hold on to being human. Then the door opens and the real nightmare walks in. Ishihara, a guard who blames Rokurouta for something, and Sasaki, a doctor who gets off on hurting boys. Beatings, humiliation, things done in the dark that nobody talks about. The seven of them survive it together, one day at a time, clinging to a promise: get out, meet again on the outside. But freedom is years away, and the streets waiting for them are just as broken as the system that locked them up. When the sentences finally run out, what exactly is left of the people who walk through that gate?
