Kino is fifteen, and her best friend is a motorcycle that talks. Not a metaphor, not a gag: Hermes really does talk, and together they roll from one country to the next with no map worth trusting. These places barely know each other exists. One is still stuck in the late Middle Ages. Another has just built its first steam engine and printing press. Somewhere else they have already beaten gravity and built machines that think, and if you find that strange, wait until you meet the animals that hold conversations. Three days is all they allow themselves in any single town. Just enough to see how people live, never enough to change anything. They watch a nation where everyone works until they drop and another where the whole point of a life is making strangers smile. Some customs are cruel. Some are ridiculous. Kino and Hermes just sit there on the roadside, taking it in, refusing to play judge. So what happens when you find a country that is perfectly happy and you are sure, absolutely sure, that it is wrong?
