A sunny afternoon in Paris, and Mireille Bouquet opens an email that should be junk. A Japanese schoolgirl wants to go on a pilgrimage into the past with her. Mireille almost deletes it. Then the message starts playing a song, one she hasn't heard since she was a kid, and her hand stops moving. They meet. Men with guns show up fast. Mireille handles her share, but Kirika drops several of them on her own, calm as anything, and that's the part that bothers Mireille. The girl kills without feeling a thing about it. Worse, she has no idea who she is or where the skill came from. Just one word left in her head. So they team up and take jobs under the name Noir. Every contract pulls them deeper into the organization that has been running both their lives since before either of them could walk. The partnership holds, but barely, and neither one is sure how much of it is trust and how much is just necessity. When the last piece finally surfaces, will either of them still want to know?
