Maria spends her days in Shanghai chasing stories for the papers, camera in hand, with Minoru grumbling along beside her. A local festival looks like easy material. Then masked men start shooting at a pale-haired girl, and Maria is standing right in the middle of it. A friend from childhood drops out of nowhere and pulls her clear. Canaan. She fights like it costs her nothing, and she does not stick around to explain. Meanwhile, something worse is moving quietly through the city: a virus, and people who want to use it. Canaan knows the person behind this. That is the problem. To stop him she has to go back to a place and a past she walked away from, and Maria, who only wanted a good photo, is already too deep in to step out. Who is Canaan really, and what did she leave behind that is now coming for her?
