Three decades have passed since the war between Earth and the Zentradi ended. Now humans and Zentradi share the same cities and the same sky, and on the planet Eden a secret military contest is underway: two prototype fighters, the YF-19 and the YF-21, are competing to become the next-generation variable fighter. Isamu Alva Dyson gets handed the YF-19, mostly because his hot temper got him shipped off to a quiet base. Then he finds out who is flying the rival machine. Guld Goa Bowman, half human, half Zentradi, his old classmate and the guy who once wanted the same girl. Her name is Myung Fang Long. Back then the three of them were inseparable. Now she produces Sharon Apple, a virtual idol whose concerts fill stadiums and whose face is everywhere. The reunion goes about as well as you would expect: old grudges, old feelings, no clean way to sort any of it out. And the deeper Isamu and Guld push their prototypes, the more it looks like the Supernova project and Sharon Apple are tied together in ways nobody wants to explain. Two men in rival cockpits, one woman caught between them, and a digital star who never blinks. When the machines start flying themselves, who is really in control?
