The colony Heliopolis stayed out of it. Neutral ground, no sides, just students and classrooms while Earth and the space colonies tore each other apart. Kira Yamato is one of those students, a Coordinator keeping his head down, until ZAFT soldiers storm in and start hauling off five brand new Gundams. They grab four. He ends up in the cockpit of the fifth one, the Strike, because the alternative is dying right there with his friends. Then he sees who is leading the raid. Asuran Zala. His childhood friend, now wearing the other uniform. Kira fights him off anyway, pilots the Strike out alive, and next thing he knows he is standing on the deck of the Archangel, an Earth Alliance ship, signing up with the people he was raised to think of as the enemy. That is the part that gets him. He wanted to protect the people around him, and the only way to do it is to shoot at the people he grew up with. Every battle puts him face to face with someone he used to know. So how long can you keep telling yourself you are on the right side before the person in the other cockpit stops being a friend and just becomes a target?
