A city kid named Keiichi moves to a quiet mountain village in the summer of 1983. He's the only boy in a club of four girls: Rena, Mion, Rika, Satoko. Card games, board games, hide and seek until dark. Life is warm and easy, and he settles in fast. Then he finds an old newspaper clipping. A murder. Something ugly buried in Hinamizawa's past, and his new friends go quiet whenever he asks. Smiles that don't reach the eyes. Answers that stop mid sentence. Meanwhile someone watches all of this happen and remembers every other time it has ended the same way, because this isn't the village's first loop through hell. That person sets out to break the cycle for good. But the pieces have shifted. People who should act one way don't. And the one who thought they knew every move is stuck in a game with no rules left.
