One day Masato Akitsu is an ordinary student. The next, men from a secret government project lock him away and tell him his whole life was staged. His destiny? To pilot a giant robot called Zeorymer of the Heavens. If that sounds hard to swallow, it gets worse: he watches his own parents take a payoff for raising him, like a bill finally coming due. Fifteen years ago an outfit called Hau Dragon built eight machines, each one a force of nature in metal. Their creator burned seven of them and handed the eighth, Zeorymer, to the government, along with an embryo. That embryo grew up to be Masato. Now Hau Dragon has rebuilt its seven and wants its missing piece back, and the Last Guardian has no one else to put in the cockpit except Masato and a woman named Himuro. So the two of them climb in and fight. The problem is that neither of them is exactly who they think they are, and the people giving the orders know more than they are saying. When the machine you were born to pilot starts remembering things you do not, whose hands are really on the controls?
