Zuru is just a kid from a tiny settlement called the Electrofishers, scraping by in a corner of a city that never stopped building itself. No sky, no horizon, just endless floors stacked in every direction. Food is almost gone. So she takes a crew out to scavenge, and a watchtower spots them. That is all it takes. The Safeguard wakes up, and the machines come pouring in. Her friends fall, one after another, and the exits seal shut. Then a stranger walks out of the dark, a man named Killy, and drops the attackers like it is nothing. Zuru wants to be grateful. She cannot be. Who is this guy, and why does he show up exactly when everyone else is dying? What he tells her is harder to swallow than the machines: he climbed up from thousands of levels below, hunting for humans who carry the Net Terminal Genes, the one thing that could give people back control of the city and shut the Safeguard down for good. So she and the survivors throw in with him, walking into a structure that wants them dead, chasing a gene that may not even exist anymore. If the key to saving everyone was lost ages ago, what exactly are they still walking toward?
