A boy wakes up on the stone floor of a dungeon inside an online game called The World. He has no memory of how he got there, only a name: Tsukasa. Everyone else can log out whenever they want. He reaches for the menu, and nothing happens. The exit is simply gone. Then there is the cat. A strange, tampered creature that follows him around, and the Crimson Knights, the game's self-appointed police, decide Tsukasa must be a hacker. So he runs. He hides in quiet corners of a vast world, ducking the knights and the players who keep asking too many questions. In an old dungeon he opens a chest and finds a slab that turns into a guardian, a thing that promises to keep him safe from all harm. It sounds like help. It might be something else entirely. Subaru, the woman who leads the Crimson Knights, wants answers too. She and a handful of players who crossed paths with Tsukasa start digging into why one user cannot leave the system. The deeper they go, the less the game behaves like a game. Can they figure out what is really holding him inside before it gets out of hand?
