Kazuto Kirigaya takes a part-time job at a private institute called Rath, testing a machine that reads something deeper than brainwaves: a person's Fluctlight, the tech version of a soul. Inside it waits the Underworld, a world so real it has its own sky. Every time he logs out, the memories of what happened in there get wiped. All that sticks with him is one name. Alice. He has no idea why it makes his skin crawl. Then one night he walks Asuna home, and a face from the past steps out of the dark. The fight leaves him bleeding out on the ground. When he opens his eyes again, he is deep inside a massive forest, and there is no logout button. A boy finds him there, acting like they have known each other for years. The kid should be a regular NPC. His fear and his laughter say otherwise. Piece by piece, memories start creeping back. A childhood. This same boy. A girl with hair like sunlight. And that name again, the one he was never supposed to forget. If the Underworld is just a simulation, why does it feel more like home than home does?
