Maquia lives among the Iorph, a people who stop aging in their teens and watch centuries drift by without them. She has everything she needs and still feels hollow: no parents, no one to hold on to, just a quiet ache and a rule that says never leave home. Then the kingdom of Mezarte comes with its tamed dragons and burns the whole village down, hunting her kind for the secret of their endless years. A rampaging beast carries her off and dies in a forest, and she stumbles out of the wreckage with nothing. Then she hears crying. A baby, alone in a looted village, and something in her cracks open. She picks him up and names him Ariel, with no plan, no idea how humans raise children, and no clue that he will grow old while she stays exactly as she is. She learns to cook, to lie about being his sister, to let go of his hand in public. The years roll past, his voice drops, and the boy she carried becomes a man who could pass for her father. Every promise she made to herself keeps getting tested by the simple fact of time. Can a girl who never grows up hold on to a son who does?
