Taeko is twenty seven and Tokyo has worn her down. So she takes a break from her office job and rides the train north to Yamagata, where her relatives are bringing in the harvest and could use an extra pair of hands. Somewhere along the way, the woman in the window seat stops being alone: a fifth grader in a school uniform sits down beside her, and it is her. Her own childhood, tagging along for the trip. Then a young farmer named Toshio is waiting at the station to drive her the rest of the way, and the quiet visit starts to fill up with people. Long days in the fields, meals with the family, neighbors who treat her like she never left. And the whole time, that ten year old girl keeps tugging at her sleeve, asking about the dreams she used to have, back when she was sure her life would turn out differently. Rural Yamagata is beautiful, but it is also hard, muddy work, and Taeko begins to notice how far the woman she became has drifted from the girl on the train. So what happens when you finally look at the life you settled for and ask whether it is the one you actually wanted?
