Giovanni lives on the edge of a quiet village, where his mother stays in bed and his father never came back from the fishing boats. At school he is the kid nobody picks. Only Campanella, the mayor's son, ever walks beside him. Then comes the Festival of Stars, and Giovanni, alone on a hill, lifts his eyes and sees a steam train hanging in the sky. He climbs aboard. Campanella is already sitting there, waiting, as if he knew. The train runs on tracks nobody laid, past planets full of strange travelers and places that feel like memories you never had. Somewhere along the way the line between what is real and what is not simply dissolves, and the two boys stop being sure of anything except that they are moving. Every stop takes something from them, or gives something back. What is this train really carrying, and why is Campanella the one who never seems surprised to be on it?
