In the far future, immortality is for sale. Anyone with enough money can trade their flesh for a mechanical body and live forever, and Tetsuro, a scrappy kid from a poor part of Earth, wants in. Not for the philosophy of it. He just wants the kind of life where nobody can shoot you down in the street. There's a free one waiting at the end of the line, they say, but you have to ride the Galaxy Express 999 to get there. Then Count Mecha, a man-machine hybrid with a taste for hunting, kills Tetsuro's mother right in front of him. Everything he was saving for, everything he was living for, is gone in a second. Just as he's about to die too, a tall blonde woman named Maetel steps in and pulls him out. She looks so much like his mother it's unsettling. She hands him a pass for the train, but there's a catch: he rides with her, or not at all. So they climb aboard and blast off, stopping at one strange planet after another, each with its own rules and its own ways of breaking people. Maetel never explains why she picked him. What is she really after, and why does she wear that same sad expression every time the train pulls into a new station?
