Millie Nocturne wants to be the best at everything in the universe, and detective work is just her latest project. Then two strangers crash into her life and wreck the plan: Kane Blueriver, who swings a psi-blade and pilots the starship Swordbreaker, and Canal, the ship's computer, who happens to look like a girl and talks back like she owns the place. Suddenly Millie is not solving cases, she is crew. Space throws everything at them. Crime lords with too much money. Starships that stopped taking orders. Hijackers in chicken suits, which sounds funny until the lasers start. Kane cuts first and asks later, Canal complains the whole time, and Millie keeps insisting she is in charge. So why does a smart-mouthed hologram and a mercenary with a glowing blade need a self-proclaimed genius detective on board? And what exactly is the Swordbreaker running from?
