A meteor hits Earth and suddenly people start dying in ways nobody can explain. The culprit: Phantoms, wandering life forms whose home world was destroyed, and whose touch kills. Some deaths are instant. Others drag on for weeks. The remaining cities hide behind energy barriers, and humanity is running out of time. Aki Ross, a scientist, thinks she has the answer. She and her old mentor Dr. Sid have found a kind of spiritual energy, tied to the planet itself, that might wipe the Phantoms out for good. The military has its own ideas, and so does the council. Everyone wants the same thing: Earth back. Nobody agrees on how to get it. Aki heads out with Dr. Sid, Captain Edwards and his Deep Eyes squad, hunting something that could save everyone or get them killed. The Phantoms are terrifying enough. But the people standing in their way are just as dangerous. Can a handful of researchers and soldiers really decide what happens to the last of humankind?
