William Twining has everything planned: top marks at an elite private school, a noble family name, a future laid out years in advance. Then his uncle loses every penny, the family business collapses, and William faces the humiliation of being expelled. So he goes home and starts rummaging through the house with the butler, hunting for anything he can sell. In a basement bedroom once used by his ancestors, he finds a magic seal and breaks it without thinking. Up pops Dantalion, Grand Duke of Hell, calling him the Elector, the only human with the right to pick Hell's next ruler while Lucifer sleeps. William laughs it off. Magic is nonsense, demons are nonsense, and he wants no part of any of it. But the demons are already circling, angels are watching, and every one of them insists he is a direct descendant of King Solomon. He keeps reaching for science and logic while the whole underworld treats him as the prize. Can a boy who refuses to believe in any of this survive being the most wanted person in a war between Heaven and Hell?
