At the Barsburg Empire's Military Academy, students learn to fight with Zaiphon, a power shaped by who they are. Teito Klein is one of the best they've ever trained. Everyone else just calls him a slave. He has no memories of his past, only a friend named Mikage who doesn't care where he came from. Then the final exams arrive, and with them a secret Teito was never supposed to find. He goes after Ayanami, the high ranking official who killed his father. The attempt fails. Guards drag him to a cell to wait for whatever comes next. Mikage won't let him rot there. He gets Teito out, and Teito ends up at the church in the 7th District, where the bishops take him in and hide him from the Military. Now he has to stay ahead of Ayanami, dig up the memories that were taken from him, and figure out why he, of all people, is supposed to change the world's fate. But can he trust the people protecting him any more than the ones hunting him?
