The Black Ships showed up in Edo Bay, and everyone braced for the worst. Then a giant machine older than anyone can remember rose up and smashed the fleet to splinters. Japan slammed its doors shut, the Tokugawa shogunate stayed in charge, and the Meiji Restoration simply never happened. Steam-powered puppets rumble through the streets now, and the old order looks unshakable. Then the sky cracks open again. Giant robots come out of nowhere and tear the government apart. Meanwhile, in Nagasaki, seventeen-year-old Keiichiro has already beaten every gang in town and figures the rest of Japan is next on his list. Small problem: his crew is a pack of cowards and yes-men who do nothing but loaf. Worse, someone is murdering young men around the city, and Keiichiro stumbles onto one of the bodies. Now he is the prime suspect. A mysterious girl appears and drops a bomb on him: he is the heir of the Tokugawa line, and with the shogun fallen, the country is his to protect. His weapon is Susanoo Onigami, a colossal piloted machine that answers to exactly one kind of person, a virgin from the Tokugawa clan. Can a loudmouth street brawler with a useless crew really hold Japan together?
