1983. The Cold War is still on, and something worse has arrived: alien swarms called BETA that keep grinding humanity back toward the last surviving cities. The soldiers who fight them climb into huge Tactical Surface Fighters, and one unit in East Germany does the dirtiest work of all. The 666th squadron, Schwarzesmarken, goes after laser-class BETA with tactics nobody else would dare, and it never stops for a downed ally if that means losing the mission. Captain Irisdina Bernhard, a war hero flying a first-generation MiG-21PF, leads them. Then a rookie named Katia Waldheim joins up, cheerful and full of ideals, and the unit suddenly has a second front. Because the Stasi are watching, and the 666th's habit of ignoring orders and rescuing nobody has made some very dangerous people curious. Their real targets are Lux and Magnus, the two BETA that give the swarm its heavy firepower. Kill them, and the tide might turn. The problem is that East Germany's secret police are just as happy to bury their own soldiers as the aliens are. Every operation now means choosing between the mission and the people beside you, and Katia keeps asking questions nobody in the unit wants answered. Can Theodor keep the squadron alive long enough to matter, or will the Stasi get to them first?
