Ouri Kagami has grown up around death. The shrine he shares with other orphans doubles as a funeral home, so coffins and cold bodies are just part of the scenery. Then one night he walks in on Keisei Tagami, the man who runs the place, doing something impossible: coaxing life back into a scarred, bullet-riddled schoolgirl named Makina Hoshimura. She is not alive. Not really. Makina is a Shikabane Hime, a corpse bound by contract to hunt down other walking dead who prey on the living. Her payback is personal: the same shadowy outfit that butchered her family is still out there, tangled up with necromancers, and she intends to find every last one of them. Keisei keeps her on a leash of sorts. He is her priest, her handler, and honestly, her only friend. Ouri should stay far away. Instead he keeps bumping into her, and each encounter drags him deeper into a war between the dead and the deader. There is also the small matter of his own weird pull toward corpses, something he has never explained to anyone. What exactly is buried in Ouri's past, and why does Makina's fate seem tied to his?
