In a quiet lakeside town, Saya Kisaragi lives at the Ukishima shrine with her father, and by daylight she is just another girl in a Sambara Academy uniform, laughing with friends between classes. Come nightfall, she takes up the ceremonial sword her father entrusted to her and hunts the Elder Bane, creatures with strength far beyond any human, who treat the townspeople as nothing but prey. Only Saya can cut them down, and she does it without hesitation, again and again. Then one night she catches something in their talk. A broken covenant. A word that should mean nothing to her, and yet the monsters say it like she is supposed to know. The ground shifts. Strange visions start bleeding into her days. A dog turns up out of nowhere and asks her a question that makes no sense: who exactly did she promise to protect this village for, and what happens if she breaks that promise? Everything she built her life on, her father, her friends, the sword in her hands, starts to feel like a story someone told her. Saya keeps fighting, but she is no longer sure what she is fighting for, or whether the town she guards is even real. If the covenant was already broken, then who has been lying to her this whole time?
