A virus turned people into monsters. The ones still breathing hide behind towering walls of Varanium, the only metal that can cut Gastrea flesh. Outside those walls, Tokyo waits. Inside, a boy named Rentaro runs a small civil security outfit with his partner Enju, taking jobs nobody else wants, hunting the things that used to be human. She looks like a schoolgirl. She fights like nothing else left alive. Here is the catch: Enju carries the same virus in her blood. Girls like her are called Cursed Children, and the law hands them to Promoters who point them at the enemy and hope they come back. Rentaro is her Promoter. He is also the closest thing she has to family. Every mission they scrape through together puts them deeper into a war where the people they save would rather see Enju dead. Then the government comes calling with a job that is bigger than the usual extermination run. Stop Tokyo from falling. That is all they say at first. Rentaro starts pulling at the edges and finds something worse than the monsters outside the wall. What do you do when saving the city means sacrificing the one person who trusts you completely?
