Kazuki Mutou dies one night saving a girl from a monster. Then he wakes up in his own bed, safe, and figures it was just a bad dream. It wasn't. The giant snake thing comes back, and this time it goes after his sister too. The girl he thought he rescued, Tokiko Tsumura, is the one who pulled him back from the dead, and she did it by shoving an alchemical medallion called kakugane into his chest where his heart used to be. That medallion is the only reason he is still breathing, and it is also a weapon. When he activates it, it turns into a Buso Renkin, a shape that comes straight from who he is. His is a massive spear called Sunlight Heart. Tokiko fights with a deadly scythe of her own. Together they are supposed to hunt down homunculi, monsters that have lived among people for centuries, hiding in plain sight and eating whoever they catch alone. So much for the quiet life. Kazuki wanted to protect the people close to him, and now the monsters know his name. But the kakugane can only kill what it hits, and someone out there is making more of these things every day. How long can a kid with a spear in his chest keep the fight away from the people he loves?
