Twenty two years ago the ground in Kanazawa tore open and shot upward. What's left is the Lost Ground, a wasteland of twisted rock where only the strong eat. Kazuma scrapes by as a mercenary, taking any job that pays. He's also got the Alter power: his right arm hardens into living metal, and when he swings it, things break. Then HOLY shows up. An order of elite Alter users who round up so called natives and offer them a simple deal: join us or rot in a cell. They answer to the police force HOLD, and they say they're keeping the peace. Kazuma isn't buying it. Especially not after he crosses paths with Ryuho, HOLY's star enforcer, a man just as stubborn and just as dangerous as he is. Two guys, both too proud to back down, on opposite sides of a wall that decides who counts as a citizen and who doesn't. Every fight between them pulls Kazuma deeper into something bigger than a paycheck. And the real question is whether HOLY is actually protecting anyone, or just collecting weapons. So who's really running the show out here?
