She carries the egg everywhere. Through ruins, past tanks the size of hills that grind along with nobody inside, past fishermen casting nets at shadows in water where no fish have lived for a long time. The girl fills every jar she finds and keeps walking. Then a young man shows up, a cross slung over his shoulder, and he starts asking what is inside the thing she guards so carefully. She does not know. He does not leave. So they travel together through the broken, half-drowned land, trading questions neither of them can answer: what the world was, what it is for, why either of them is still here. He watches her protect that egg like it is the last thing left. She watches him carry a cross he will not explain. Somewhere out there, goddess statues float in glass spheres above the water, and the two of them keep moving because stopping means deciding what they actually believe. What happens when he finally asks her to open it?
