Tokyo, 1968. Riots in the streets, Vietnam burning on the evening news, and in a university lecture hall a medical student with black-and-white hair sits through another class he could probably teach himself. Kuroo Hazama keeps to himself. The scars under his clothes and the ones on his face, he doesn't talk about those. Then he pulls off an operation that seasoned surgeons wouldn't touch, and the wrong people start paying attention. Student uprisings. A war nobody wants to think about. Doctors selling their licenses to the highest bidder. Hazama has Maiko, an intern too honest for her own good, and Yabu, a friend whose life is quietly falling apart, and that's about all he has. Every favor asked of him comes with a catch, every catch asks him to cut a corner of the oath he actually believes in. He fixes bodies. He can't fix the country around them, or the men who profit from keeping it sick. So what does it cost a person to save lives in a system built to sell them?
