Utakata
The last school day before summer, and Ichika Tachibana already has plans. Fourteen, polite, a little too serious for her own good, she wants these weeks to actually mean something. Then comes the cleaning duty nobody asked for, an empty building on campus, dust everywhere. In a cracked mirror she sees a face that isn't hers staring back. Her friends shrug it off. Probably the heat. That same evening the girl from the mirror walks out of it and hands Ichika her lost phone. Manatsu Kuroki, she says, nice to meet you. The charm on the phone has gone strange, its stones burning new colors, and suddenly Ichika can borrow the strength of twelve Djinn who watch over the world. Manatsu offers friendship. She also offers magic lessons, and she is in no hurry to explain why she needs Ichika to finish them. The powers feel like a gift at first. Then they start showing her things. Sights too big to hold in your head, thoughts that arrive after and refuse to leave. Manatsu says she is helping. So why does every lesson feel like it costs more than the last one?
