Mato Kuroi walks into her first day of junior high and spots a quiet girl named Yomi. She keeps trying to talk to her anyway. It goes nowhere until Yomi notices the little blue bird charm hanging off Mato's phone, a trinket from a picture book called Li'l Birds At Play, and the wall between them just drops. Soon they are inseparable. Then there is the other place. A girl with black hair and glowing blue eyes swings a cannon bigger than she is, and she never hesitates before charging into the fight. Her name is Black Rock Shooter. In that world Yomi exists too, as Dead Master. Whatever scars one girl takes, the other feels it somehow, and neither of them has any idea. Back in school, Mato has her hands full. KagarI Izuriha, Yomi's childhood friend, won't let go of her, and she has a wheelchair and a grip that tightens every time Mato gets close. So what exactly ties Mato to the girl with the cannon, and what happens to Yomi if that link ever snaps?
