The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

Justy Ueki Tylor has his whole life mapped out. Join the United Planets Space Force, snag some boring desk job far from the shooting, collect a fat pension, done. Then he walks straight into a hostage standoff and somehow, by pure dumb luck, comes out the hero who saved an admiral. The reward? Command of the Soyokaze, a rusted-out cruiser held together by hope and tape. His new crew is a pack of brawling mercenaries, arrogant flyboys and officers who want nothing to do with him. Nobody salutes. Nobody listens. Meanwhile the Holy Raalgon Empire is already rolling in, guns blazing, and Earth's survival now depends on this laid-back womanizer who refuses to take anything seriously. Is Tylor a clueless idiot coasting on luck, or the sharpest man in the galaxy playing everyone for fools? And if the answer is the second one, why does he keep grinning like it's the first?
