Ikta Solork wants two things: a woman on his arm and a quiet spot to nap. That is the whole plan. Then the Katjvarna Empire goes to war with the Republic of Kioka, and his childhood friend Yatorishino Igsem drags him into the military exam. She has a family name to protect and needs to finish first, so she bribes him with a private corner of the Imperial library. Easy deal. A rogue storm has other ideas. The ship carrying the students goes down, and Ikta washes up in enemy territory with Yatorishino, the infantryman Matthew, the sniper Torway and the medic Haroma. Before anyone can figure out a way home, they learn that Princess Chamille, heir to the throne, has been taken hostage nearby. Five half drowned students against an enemy outpost. They pull it off anyway, and each walks away with the title of Imperial Knight, one of the highest honors a soldier can earn. Now the carefree slacker is a hero, and the war is not done with him. Can a man who never wanted to fight talk his way out of the one job he cannot refuse?
