Makoto Mizuhara just wanted to finish his project for the school festival. Instead, Katsuhiko Jinnai, the student council president and Makoto's lifelong rival, sneaks into the physics lab one night and wrecks the machine. A portal rips open and swallows Makoto, his friend Nanami, their teacher Fujisawa, and Jinnai himself. Then the bugs come. Giant ones, and they want Makoto for dinner. He runs straight into Fujisawa and a girl named Rune Venus. Turns out she is a princess, and the place is called El-Hazard. Her advisors eye the strangers like they might be spies, but Rune says they are guests and starts showing Makoto around the palace of Roshtaria. Nanami and Jinnai are somewhere out there too. Makoto has no idea. So he buries himself in the problem of getting home, while Jinnai is loose in a brand new world with a grudge and a talent for causing trouble. Friends split across a strange land, a princess who trusts too easily, and a rival who blames Makoto for everything. What happens when Jinnai finally finds him?
