Gene Starwind spends his days on Sentinel III fixing ships and chasing bounties with Jim, his partner and brother. Their business card promises any job you can name. Then a woman named Hilda walks in and hires them as bodyguards. She is a wanted criminal on the run, and the job is not what it looks like. What she leaves behind is Melfina, a quiet girl with no memory of who she is, and a ship called Outlaw Star that nobody else in the galaxy should have. Suddenly the brothers are flying the thing they only ever dreamed about, with police, pirates and bounty hunters on their tail and no map for where they are going. The crew grows stranger by the port: a Taoist mage, a killer catgirl, and a lot of people who want Melfina for reasons she cannot explain. Everyone treats her like cargo, but cargo does not ask questions. So what exactly was she built to do, and who gets to her first?
