Three years into the war, Mahito loses his mother in a hospital fire. Not long after, his father remarries her younger sister, Natsuko, and moves the boy out of Tokyo to his late mother's old family house in the countryside. The place is quiet, the school is worse, and the local kids want nothing to do with him. Only one thing keeps showing up: a gray heron that watches him from the garden and won't leave him alone. Then the bird starts talking. It says his mother is still alive, that he can bring her back, and it points him toward a strange tower on the property. Mahito doesn't buy it, until the day pregnant Natsuko walks into that tower and doesn't come out. He follows her in and falls straight through into a world below, where the living and the dead bleed into each other and nothing works the way it should. Now he has to find Natsuko and get them both home. The heron keeps offering deals. The tower keeps shifting. And somewhere in all of it sits the question he can't escape: what does it actually take to want to live?
