A machine built to end wars sits in a lab in Japan, weeks away from waking up. Malcolm Lee has kids, deadlines, and a plan: let Kokoro think for itself, and it will choose people over extinction. Then the calendar flips to August 1997. She and Malcolm are on the same clock from opposite ends. Two killers, one unborn mind, and a father who has to keep his creation from deciding humans deserve to die. What happens if Kokoro looks at the world around it and agrees with Skynet?
