It is December 2010, and Rintarou Okabe has stopped pretending. The lab coat is gone, the mad scientist act is retired, and what is left is a college student going through the motions, avoiding the people who have no idea what he lost. He failed to save Makise Kurisu, and the memory sits in his chest like a stone. Work, lectures, small talk. Anything to keep from thinking about the time machine he never wants to see again. Then a short, sharp-tongued woman named Maho Hiyajo walks into a technology forum and cracks the whole thing open. She was Kurisu's colleague in America. So was Professor Alexis Leskinen, and the two of them have built Amadeus, a program that stores a person's memories and rebuilds them into something that talks, jokes, and remembers exactly like the original. They have already done it with Kurisu. Alexis hires Okabe to study how the simulation behaves, and suddenly he is sitting across from a voice he thought was buried forever. He knows better than anyone what happens when you poke at time. Every conversation with that screen pulls him closer to the past he swore off, and the wrong move could break something he cannot fix. Is he talking to a person, or to a ghost that will drag him back into the nightmare?
