In a quiet town in Hokkaido, two shy teens trade notebooks instead of words. Chise is small, clumsy, and crazy about Shuuji, her childhood friend. Every day means the same steep climb to school, gossip about who likes who, and not much else. Then Shuuji goes to Sapporo for a gift. Jets roar overhead, the city burns, a friend never comes home. In the smoke he finds Chise: steel wings, a giant gun where her right arm should be. She never asked for this. Now the war crawls toward their town, and the girl he loves can level a city. Can he still reach the person inside?
