So each young Shadow gets handed a Living Doll: a servant who cleans up the mess and smiles for two. Emilico wakes up cheerful, curious about everything, and assigned to a quiet master named Kate. The two could not be more different. She learns the rules, meets the other dolls, and starts asking why the house needs so many of them in the first place. One rule keeps repeating: don't worry about small things. Easy advice, except Emilico notices everything, and the manor is hiding plenty. What happens to a doll who starts wondering what she was actually made for?
