Sakon Tachibana has black hair, a calm face, and a puppet on his arm named Ukon. Most people see a traveling act: the grandson of Saemon Tachibana, a living national treasure of Bunraku, showing off the family craft. Ukon is no ordinary doll either. A girl named Unosuke carved him back in the early Meiji era, and something about that puppet feels a little too alive. Then the curtain rises on a dead body. What starts as a performance turns into a crime scene, and Sakon and Ukon are suddenly the ones picking apart alibis and lies. The act becomes the cover. A puppeteer who reads people, a puppet who talks back, and killers who never counted on either of them. Case after case, the two of them pull at threads the police miss, and the answers are never simple. But who is really speaking when Ukon opens his mouth? And why does a doll made over a century ago seem to know things Sakon does not?
